The railhead reached Nairobi in May 1899 “enroute” to the present day Kisumu part of what is now Uganda. The moving of the railway headquarters from Mombasa to Nairobi by its chief engineer, Sir George Whitehouse resulted in the subsequent growth of Nairobi as a commercial and business hub of the then British East Africa protectorate (Situma 1992:167). By 1900, Nairobi had already In 1907, Nairobi became the capital of Kenya. In 1950, it became a city.
